Maintenance Operative

If you enjoy practical, hands-on work, take pride in keeping spaces safe and well-maintained, and love the idea of supporting environments that help children thrive, this could be the perfect role for you. Come join our team at Amegreen Children’s Services.

We are seeking a reliable, dedicated, and experienced maintenance professional to look after our homes, schools, learning facilities, and offices. This is your chance to contribute to a meaningful cause - providing safe, functional, and therapeutic environments for children and young people who need them most.

If you’re someone who enjoys practical, hands‑on work and loves the satisfaction of keeping outdoor spaces safe, tidy, and enjoyable for others, we’d be excited to hear from you. Join us and help create environments where people and animals can truly thrive.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Property & DIY Maintenance: Carry out general maintenance and DIY tasks across all Amegreen sites—including our Head Office, Residential Homes, Schools, and equine therapy facility.
  • Essential Repairs: Perform essential internal and external repairs such as painting and decorating, basic carpentry (including changing or fixing locks), joinery, adjusting fixtures, and assembling or relocating furniture.
  • Plumbing & Waste Management: Clear and unblock sinks, toilets, and drains; clean kitchen grease traps; and ensure all waste materials are disposed of safely and responsibly.
  • Grounds & Animal Enclosures: Help maintain outdoor areas, ensuring lawns are mowed, hedges/trees are trimmed, and fences are built or repaired. You'll also assist in maintaining animal enclosures at our equine therapy centre so they remain safe and welcoming.
  • Equipment Care: Look after all company tools and equipment, ensuring they stay clean, safe, and in good working condition.
  • Health & Safety: Conduct routine health and safety checks, preventative maintenance, and ad-hoc repairs while ensuring strict compliance with all Health and Safety policies at all times.
  • Driving Duties: Undertake occasional driving duties across our various sites as needed to support the service.

About you:

  • An experienced maintenance professional or skilled handy person with a broad knowledge of DIY, basic plumbing, and carpentry.
  • Able to work independently, take initiative, and manage your daily tasks using a structured booking system.
  • Calm under pressure, organised, and capable of prioritising workloads when urgent repairs arise.
  • Holder of a full, clean UK driver’s license (essential for travel between our sites).
  • Kind, empathetic, and entirely comfortable working within a children's residential care and school setting.
  • Familiar with COSHH regulations and safe maintenance practices.
  • Willing to be a true team player and attend urgent call-outs outside of normal hours on rare occasions.

Working hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 8:30am - 4:30pm (excluding a 30-minute unpaid lunch break).
  • Flexibility: Required to work occasional weekends or out-of-hours to support urgent maintenance and facility needs across the service.

Equality and Diversity:

We are committed to creating a diverse, inclusive workplace where everyone feels safe and respected. Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. If you require any adjustments during the application process, please let us know.

Amegreen Children’s Services is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All roles are subject to a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check, thorough reference checks, and a full review of employment history. Adherence to Safeguarding and GDPR policies is mandatory, and training will be provided.
